Dog-Friendly Leavenworth
Leavenworth is surprisingly great with dogs. Outdoor patios everywhere, river access, shaded trails — your pup will have a better weekend than you. Here's everything you need to know so nobody gets stressed (including the dog).
Dog-Friendly Trails
Dogs must be leashed on all trails in and around Leavenworth (it's national forest land). That said, there are some genuinely great options.
Waterfront Park & Blackbird Island
The best dog walk in town, hands down. Flat, shaded trails along the Wenatchee River with a footbridge to Blackbird Island. The loop trail is about a mile and dogs love the river sounds, the shade, and the other dogs they'll inevitably meet. The shoreline at Blackbird Island has gentle access points where your dog can wade in.
Icicle Creek Trail
Follow Icicle Road past downtown and you'll find several trail access points along the creek. The terrain varies from flat meadow walks to gentle forest trails. Multiple creek access points where dogs can splash around. The water is cold (it's snowmelt), but most dogs don't care.
Peshastin Pinnacles State Park
The 1.5-mile loop trail through the sandstone spires is dog-friendly and leashed dogs are welcome. The terrain is dry and desert-like — great in spring and fall, brutal in summer heat. Bring water for both of you. There's limited shade.
Icicle Ridge (Lower Section)
If your dog is a good hiker, the lower section of Icicle Ridge is doable. The trail climbs through forest with occasional viewpoints. Bring plenty of water — there's no water on the trail once you leave the trailhead. Turn around at the first viewpoint (about 2 miles up) for a solid workout without overdoing it.
Where Dogs Can't Go
Off-Limits for Pups
Know before you go — these places don't allow dogs:
- Inside Front Street shops — Most stores don't allow dogs inside (a few exceptions, but don't count on it)
- Enchantment Lakes / Alpine Lakes Wilderness core zone — Dogs are prohibited in the Enchantments permit area
- Leavenworth Reindeer Farm — No dogs allowed (for obvious reasons)
- Leavenworth Adventure Park — No dogs on rides or in the activity areas
- Indoor restaurants — Washington state health code. Patios only.
Dog-Friendly Restaurants & Patios
Leavenworth's patio culture is strong. Here are the spots where your dog is genuinely welcome — not just tolerated.
München Haus
The big outdoor biergarten is basically a dog park that serves beer. Picnic tables, gravel ground, and a steady stream of dog-loving tourists who'll ask to pet yours. The bratwurst-and-beer combo is perfect for a long, lazy patio session. Water bowls usually available.
Icicle Brewing Company
Dog-friendly patio with fire tables and mountain views. The vibe is laid-back and the staff are genuinely dog-friendly — they'll often bring a water bowl without being asked. Great beer, decent food, and the patio is spacious enough that even big dogs aren't in anyone's way.
Bushel & Bee Taproom
A craft cider and beer taproom with rotating taps and a patio where dogs are welcome. Board games, Wi-Fi, and a relaxed atmosphere. They allow outside food, so grab something from a nearby spot and settle in with your pup.
Rhein Haus Leavenworth
Traditional German food with umbrella-covered picnic tables outside. Pretzels, schnitzel, bratwurst — the classics. Dogs welcome on the patio. The covered tables are great on drizzly days.
Leavenworth Sausage Garten
Casual sausage stand with outdoor seating. Quick, cheap, and dog-friendly. Grab a currywurst and sit at the picnic tables. Low-key and perfect when you don't want a full sit-down meal with a dog underfoot.
LOGE Leavenworth Downtown
Coffeehouse with outdoor seating where leashed dogs can join you. Great coffee, matcha, and eiskaffee. A solid morning spot before hitting the trails.
Yodelin Broth Co
The beer garden with mountain views is dog-friendly. Healthy bowls, great broth, craft cocktails. One of the nicer patios in town.
River & Water Access
Best Spots for Swimming Dogs
- Blackbird Island shoreline — Gentle bank, easy wade-in. The water is calm here and dogs can splash without the current being dangerous.
- Icicle Creek access points — Multiple spots along Icicle Road where you can walk down to the creek. Shallow areas perfect for dogs. The water is COLD.
- Waterfront Park riverbank — Access to the Wenatchee River. Be cautious — the current is stronger than it looks in summer. Shallow spots near the shore are fine; don't let dogs swim in the main channel.
Dog-Friendly Lodging
Where to Stay with Your Dog
- Vacation rentals (Airbnb/VRBO) — Many listings allow dogs. Filter for "pets allowed" when searching. Always confirm the pet policy and any fees before booking — some charge $25-75/stay for dogs.
- Icicle River RV Resort — Pet-friendly camping. Your dog gets to be outdoors all weekend.
- LOGE Camps Leavenworth — Dog-friendly hotel with a lodge vibe. They get it — this isn't a hotel that "tolerates" pets.
- Sleeping Lady — Check their pet policy before booking. It varies by room type.
Practical Tips
Keeping Your Dog Safe & Happy
- Bring water. Leavenworth gets dry and hot in summer. Carry a collapsible bowl and water for your dog on every outing.
- Poop bags are mandatory. Everywhere. No exceptions. Pack more than you think you need.
- Hot pavement warning: In July and August, asphalt on Front Street can burn paws. Walk early morning or evening, or stick to grass and dirt trails.
- Rattlesnake awareness: Eastern Washington is rattlesnake country. Stay on trails, keep your dog on leash, and watch where you step — especially at Peshastin Pinnacles and on Icicle Ridge.
- Ticks: Check your dog after hikes, especially in spring and early summer. Tall grass and brush along Icicle Creek are prime tick habitat.
- Car safety: Never leave your dog in the car. Even in the mountains, summer temps inside a parked car can kill. Leavenworth has no covered parking structures — your car is in direct sun.
- Pet supplies: A Paw Above on Front Street sells gourmet treats, toys, and basic supplies. But bring everything you need from home — selection is limited.
