Getting to Leavenworth

I make this drive 15+ times a year. I have opinions about when to leave, which route to take, and where to stop. Here's everything you need to know.

The Drive from Seattle

The Main Route: US-2 over Stevens Pass

📍 ~120 miles · ⏱ 2–3.5 hours depending on traffic

Take US-2 east from Everett through Monroe, Sultan, and Skykomish, then over Stevens Pass. The road is beautiful — old-growth forest, river valleys, and mountain passes. In ideal conditions, it's a 2-hour drive. In reality, traffic and weather can push it to 3.5 hours.

When to Leave

  • Before 7 AM Saturday — roughly 2 hours. The road is yours.
  • 9 AM Saturday — you're sitting in Sultan traffic wondering why you didn't leave at 7.
  • Friday after work — leave by 3 PM or you'll hate everything.
  • Sunday return — leave Leavenworth by 2 PM to avoid the westbound crush over Stevens Pass. After 4 PM is miserable.
💡 I will die on this hill: US-2 is the right route. Some people suggest I-90 to Highway 97 (through Cle Elum). It's longer, it's less scenic, and you still end up in traffic. US-2, early morning, end of discussion.

Stops Along the Way

  • Sultan — Last stop for cheap gas and fast food before the mountains. Fill up here.
  • Skykomish — A few places to stretch your legs if you need a break. The Cascadia Inn does decent food.
  • Stevens Pass — If you're a skier, note the turnoff. Otherwise, keep driving — Leavenworth is 35 minutes past the summit.

Parking in Town

The main lots near Front Street fill up fast on weekends. Here's the strategy:

  • The lot by the Festhalle fills first. Don't even try it after 10 AM on a Saturday.
  • Residential streets south of Front Street — legal and usually have spots when the main lots are full. This is where locals park.
  • Festival weekends — they run shuttle parking from outlying lots. Use it. Driving around looking for a spot on Oktoberfest weekend is a special kind of misery.
  • Arrive before 10 AM on a regular weekend and parking is a non-issue.
  • Weekdays? Park wherever you want. The town is yours.
💡 If you're staying at a vacation rental within walking distance of Front Street, park once and don't move your car until you leave. Walk everything.

Winter Driving

Stevens Pass gets serious snow. This is not optional advice — this is "you will get stuck or fined if you ignore it" advice.

  • Check WSDOT pass conditions before you leave. Every time. No exceptions.
  • Carry chains even with AWD. Traction requirements are enforced and the fine for not carrying chains is more annoying than just buying the $40 chains.
  • Drive slow. Leave extra following distance. Don't be the person sliding off the road because you were texting.
  • AWD or 4WD recommended November through March. Front-wheel drive with chains works but adds stress.
  • Give yourself extra time. A 2-hour summer drive can become 3.5+ hours in winter conditions.
💡 Keep a winter kit in your car: chains, blanket, flashlight, snacks, phone charger. If the pass closes while you're on it, you could be sitting for hours.

Day Trip vs. Overnight?

Day trip works. Leave early (before 8 AM), and you'll have a full day for Front Street, a short hike, lunch, wine tasting, and the drive home.

But overnight is the move. The town at night — lit up with string lights, without the day-trip crowds — is a completely different experience. Sunrise from Waterfront Park with a coffee is worth the extra $150 for a rental. You also avoid the stressful timed departure ("we need to leave by 3 or traffic will be terrible").

My recommendation: first visit, stay one night. You'll know immediately if you want to come back for a full weekend. (Spoiler: you will.)

Cell Service & Practical Notes

  • Cell service: Coverage is decent in town (T-Mobile and Verizon work fine) but gets spotty on Icicle Road and non-existent on most trails. Download offline maps before you hike.
  • Cash: Some smaller shops and the farmer's market are cash-only or cash-preferred. ATMs on Front Street have tourist-trap fees. Bring some cash.
  • Gas: Fill up in Sultan on the way there. Gas in Leavenworth is fine but pricier than the lowlands.
  • Dogs: Leavenworth is very dog-friendly. Most patios allow dogs, Blackbird Island is great for walks, and Icicle Brewing's patio welcomes pups by the fire pits.
